Take Control in a Time of Change and Uncertainty
In moments of political shifts and uncertainty, it’s natural to feel unsettled. But these times also offer an opportunity for growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to what truly matters.
As we move forward from the recent U.S. presidential election, I offer you the same advice that I have told my financial clients for years about their investments:
“Many things about money and the market are out of your control. It is the cyclical nature of the stock market and the economy to go up and go down. Focus on the things you can control. Live your best life and make the most of the assets that you have.”
This advice works for all areas of your life. However, for many people—myself included—this may be especially difficult right now. Despite strong post-election markets, I have heard from many clients who are concerned about how their financial portfolio may be affected by the new administration’s economic policies, what it means for the future of their Social Security and Medicare benefits, and whether they would be better off moving to another country.
Here's how to take a break to reflect and realign yourself to put things in better perspective so you are making objective decisions based on what’s best for you and your future.
1. Cultivate Love and Compassion
In challenging times, it’s vital to nurture love—starting with yourself. Reflect that the election results are being seen as both positive and negative. While many are elated and hopeful about the policies and promises of our next President, many others are upset deeply and concerned about the country’s future.
If you’ve reacted positively, be mindful of how others may feel and strive to understand their pain and concern. If you are feeling concerned, recognize the beauty and joy in your own life. Spend time appreciating the small moments: a conversation, a song, or the serenity of nature.
Extending love and compassion to others not only deepens our humanity but strengthens our collective resolve to find a way forward together.
2. Stay Active and Connected
Reach out to a friend, join a community group, or start a project that aligns with your values. Share ideas, support one another, and hold each other accountable to keep moving forward. Even with physical distance, technology allows us to create meaningful virtual connections through video chats, shared meals over Zoom, or even collaborative online campaigns. Staying in motion helps us transform feelings into purposeful action.
3. Choose Your News Wisely
Information is power—but it’s also overwhelming. Decide when and where you’ll consume news, and be intentional about how you process it afterward
Does a certain news source leave you feeling informed and empowered or drained and hopeless?
Balance the hard truths of current events with time for reflection, movement, or a conversation with a loved one. Be mindful of your media diet, and make sure it nourishes your spirit rather than depleting it.
4. Take Breaks from Social Media
Social media can be a double-edged sword: a tool for connection but also a source of stress. Set boundaries that work for you, like taking a day off each week or limiting your scrolling time. Instead, focus on real-world interactions, hobbies, or simply resting your mind. By stepping away from the constant noise, you give yourself the space to recharge and return with a clearer perspective.
5. Learn from Stories of Resilience
History is rich with examples of people who have faced and overcome troubling and uncertain times. Whether it’s through books, podcasts, or conversations with elders, seek out these stories. They remind us that hope is not new—and that we’re not alone in our efforts. Let their courage inspire you to write your own chapter of resilience and action.
6. Embrace Your Power as a Creator
Injustice thrives on passivity, but we are not passive beings. We are creators. Whether it’s crafting art, preparing a meal, organizing an event, or writing a letter, every act of creation reaffirms your agency and humanity. Small acts of creation remind us that we have the power to shape the world around us.
Taking The Next Step Together
The path ahead may be uncertain, but we can navigate it with hope, strength, and solidarity. By caring for ourselves and each other, we create a foundation for meaningful action and change. Remember, resilience isn’t just about enduring; it’s about growing, adapting, and finding joy—even in hard times. Together, we can move forward with courage and purpose, building a future rooted in compassion and strength.
